A pioneer in understanding the value
of videos as teaching and learning
tools, Zoltan taped many of his paintings both in workshops and in his studio.
Those done in workshops give a taste of what it was like to be with him in
that situation. Other videos were done to augment the lessons of specific books.
As a result, we have hundreds of previously undistributed tapes and now are
releasing a new tape each month from Zoltan's archives.

Presently all videos are North American (NTSC) (VHS) format
| Note from Willa I have just learned a bit about the physical care and feeding of video tapes. Zoltan always insisted that they be stored vertically--never flat. The idea is to store them like a book, fully rewound with the full reel on the bottom. If you have tapes that are stored for a year or so and they don't seem to play correctly, fast forward, rewind and try again. Tapes should be stored in your comfort zone--not too cold, too hot or too humid. If stored in a non comfort zone, they should be allowed a few hours to acclimate before they are played. |
May 2004-Dogwood Mirage--Traditional approach to floral
painting with a surprise ending.
July 2004--Splashing Surf. Surf scape (no land)
representational and yet, abstract.
August 2004--Haystack Mirror. Sunset at Cannon Beach, OR,
with Haystack Rock reflecting in quiet tidal pools.
Summer bonus--Demo Duo with Water. 2 shorter demos. First is a log tangled at
the edge of a lake or river with deep reflection. Second is a waterfall where
Zoltan used the motion of the pigment and water to imitate the falls. One of
the most requested demos in workshops.
September 2004--Peggy's Cove. Fishing shacks, boats,
docks, water, rocks. Manmade objects in a natural setting. Careful analysis of
photo reference. Working thru the "uglies" to a beautiful painting.

#1 OVERVIEW Painting subjects. Short samples of all 6 demos and corresponding
country side. Shots of all 11 demos Zoltan did in Japan.
#2 SANDA RICE FIELDS Landscape shots. On vertical paper with shots of
landscape.
#3 HIMEJI CASTLE Landscape and castle. Shadows on painting. Explaining
colors. Begins with center of interest. Inventing drama in sky. Translucent
gouache.
#4 SHIAWASE GARDEN View of the garden. High contrast. Mist to improve depth. Colors explained. Wet in wet background and mid ground. Translucent opaque
white for mist. Rocks, evergreen and water.
#5 RICE FIELDS. Photo for reference. Explaining palette. Direct painting on
dry paper expanding into wet in wet. Foreground leads to focal point in mid
ground. Visiting an old samurai homestead.
#6 HIMEJI CASTLE AT TWILIGHT. Color for an invented twilight condition.
Demo painted vertically. Blended colors for the sky. Trees negative and positive
shapes. Shots of tea ceremony and garden details.
#7 SANDA MOUNTAIN. Live pictures of the mountains. Limited palette. Slant
bristle brush as dominant tool. Negative & positive shapes. Rice fields & hints
of reflection. Glazing mist with white gouache.

These videos are demos as you would have seen in a workshop. Zoltan starts with pure white paper and ends with a finished painting. Every video is over one hour. In each case, the page number is indicated. One demo per video.
